Movie of the Week - The Happening

The Happening, a film by M. Night Shyamalan, was supposed to be an edge-of-your-seat suspense movie, containing a gigantic twist when you least expected it, just like M Night has delivered to us countless other times.  Oh! But wait! WE SAW THE TWIST FROM THE BEGINNING.  Or at least, anyone with an IQ higher than their shoe size did.

Before I continue, let me just sum up the main events of the movie first.

1) A wind starts blowing.
2) People start committing suicide.
3) Everyone wonders WHYYYY?

Yep, that’s the whole movie.  Just different montages of a brisk wind blowing over country lanes, or busy streets, just before everyone blows their brains out, or steps in front of a giant lawnmower.

As for the twist, that was revealed near the beginning of the movie, when a professor starts talking about how “plants are releasing chemicals, which interfere with the brains of peoples, etc. “.  Which pretty much made everyone go “OH! PLANTS ARE DOING THIS” and then make them sit through what can only be described as a medieval torture.

The very worst part about this movie, is it ended up not even being suspenseful, or even that entertaining, it was all about ‘going green’.  There was an actual moral behind the whole movie, stating blatantly that if we don’t start being nice to plants, they will make you kill yourself.  Which, after watching this film, you might start hoping for.
